Walk into any dispensary or browse any hemp catalog and you will meet the same two words: indica and sativa. Indica for the body, sativa for the head. Indica at night, sativa by day. It is tidy, memorable, and repeated everywhere.
It is also, according to a substantial and growing body of research, a poor predictor of how a product will actually make you feel.
Where the Labels Came From
The terms are genuinely old. Cannabis sativa was formally described by Linnaeus in 1753, and Cannabis indica by Lamarck in 1785, describing plants from India that looked structurally different from European hemp. These were botanical descriptions of plant morphology — how tall the plant grew, how broad its leaves were, how it branched.
Nothing in that original taxonomy said anything about how the plant would make a person feel. The effect-based meaning that "indica" and "sativa" carry today was layered on much later, largely through commercial and popular usage in the twentieth century.
Why the Distinction Broke Down
Decades of selective breeding and hybridization have made the categories close to meaningless as genetic descriptions. Chemical analyses of commercial cultivars have repeatedly found that plants labeled indica and plants labeled sativa do not sort into two distinct chemical groups. A product's label frequently tells you more about a grower's marketing than about its composition.
Studies comparing genetic data to labeled names have found that samples sharing a strain name often differ substantially from one another, while samples with different names sometimes turn out to be nearly identical. The naming system, in short, is not reliable.
The practical version: If two products both say "indica" but have different cannabinoid ratios and different terpene profiles, they will not feel the same. If a product says "sativa" but tests high in myrcene with a heavy cannabinoid load, it may well feel sedating. The label is not the data.
The Better Framework: Chemovars
Researchers increasingly use the term chemovar, short for chemical variety. Instead of sorting plants by shape or inherited name, a chemovar describes what is actually in it: the cannabinoid ratios and the terpene profile.
This is a more useful lens because it maps to things you can verify on a lab report. Rather than asking "is this indica or sativa," the more productive questions are:
- What is the cannabinoid ratio? A 1:1 THC to CBD product behaves quite differently from a THC-dominant one, and that difference is measurable and consistent.
- What is the total potency? Dose is one of the strongest determinants of experience — often more influential than any varietal distinction.
- What does the terpene panel show? Where a panel is available, the dominant terpenes give a better hint of character than a name does.
- What minor cannabinoids are present? CBG, CBC, CBN, and others appear in small amounts and may contribute to the overall effect.
What Strain Names Are Still Good For
None of this makes strain names worthless. They remain useful as a rough shorthand within a single producer's catalog: if a grower's "Galaxy Haze" was grown from consistent genetics under consistent conditions, this year's batch will likely resemble last year's. Names carry real information about lineage and grower intent.
What they cannot do is transfer reliably between producers. One company's version of a famous strain may share little chemically with another's.
Applying This to Hemp Products
For hemp-derived products specifically — edibles, tinctures, topicals — the indica/sativa question often does not apply at all. Once cannabinoids are extracted and formulated into a gummy, what determines your experience is the cannabinoid ratio, the dose, any added terpenes, and your own physiology. The morphology of the plant it came from is several steps removed.
This is one reason we describe our products by their cannabinoid profile rather than by strain lineage. A 1:1 THC-to-CBD ratio tells you something concrete and reproducible. "Indica-leaning hybrid" does not.
How to Shop With This in Mind
- Read the Certificate of Analysis, not the name. Cannabinoid content is the single most informative number available to you.
- Note the ratio, not just the total. 100mg of THC alone is a different experience from 100mg of THC balanced with 100mg of CBD.
- Track your own responses. Your endocannabinoid system is individual. Two people can take the same dose of the same product and report meaningfully different experiences.
- Be skeptical of confident effect claims. Any brand promising a precise mood outcome from a plant category is selling certainty that the science does not currently support.
We label by cannabinoid ratio, because that is what actually tells you something.
