Hemp Concentrates

Concentrates are the category where handling matters most and where the least tends to get disclosed. Nothing is listed yet. Here is the specification we are building to, and the one lab panel we would check first if we were buying from someone else.

Concentrates Concentrate Everything

That sentence is the whole category in five words, and it cuts both ways.

Done well, extraction isolates the trichome — the resin heads where the cannabinoids and terpenes actually live — and leaves the plant material behind. Done badly, or done to material that should not have been used, it concentrates whatever else was on the plant right alongside them. Pesticide residue that would have been a marginal number on flower becomes a serious one after a tenfold concentration step.

This is why the testing bar here is higher than for flower, and why we care rather a lot about the input material being grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers. On flower that is a preference. On concentrates it is the difference between a clean product and a concentrated problem.

Cold Is Most Of The Quality

Almost every meaningful decision in making concentrates turns out to be a temperature decision, and most of them are made before extraction even starts.

The reason is the same as with flower, only more so. Terpenes are volatile: they evaporate at temperatures well below anything that feels hot. In flower you lose some and the rest are cushioned by the plant material around them. In a concentrate the terpenes are a large fraction of what you are actually buying, so every stage that runs warmer than it needs to is taking a bite directly out of the product.

Cold is not a preservation nicety in concentrates. It is most of the quality, and it is expensive, which is why corners get cut there first.

The Clock Starts At The Cut

Our material goes into the freezer, below 0°F, within about two hours of being cut. It is not dried first and it is not cured first.

That sounds fussy until you know that terpene loss begins immediately at harvest and never stops. Every hour the material sits at room temperature is aroma leaving through the top of the bin. Freezing it stops the clock. Everything downstream is then working with material that is as close to the living plant as it is ever going to get.

This is what "live" means on a label — live rosin, live resin. It refers to fresh-frozen input rather than dried and cured input. It is one of the few marketing terms in this industry that has a specific, checkable meaning, which is why it is worth knowing.

The Wash And The Press

Ice water extraction works because trichome heads become brittle when they are very cold and snap cleanly off the plant in agitated water. We hold the wash between 34 and 38°F throughout.

Let that water warm up and the heads soften rather than snap. Instead of separating, they smear, and plant material comes along with them. The visible result is a greener, darker product; the result you can taste is a harsher one.

From there the hash is freeze-dried rather than air-dried. Air-drying wet hash at room temperature costs terpenes for the same reason everything else does, and gives microbial growth a window while the material sits damp.

Then the press

Rosin gets pressed between 160 and 200°F. There is a real and well-known trade here: push the plates hotter and yield goes up, because more material flows. The terpene profile flattens at the same time. Higher temperatures are more product and a duller product, and since yield is the number that shows up in a spreadsheet while flavour is the number that shows up in your mouth, you can guess which way the pressure runs.

We would rather press at 170°F and get less. If that ever changes you will be able to tell, which is a reasonable definition of accountability.

Solventless Versus Solvent, Honestly

Solventless is having a moment, and a certain amount of what is said about it is overstated. Here is the version we think is actually true.

Solventless means ice, water, heat and pressure — bubble hash and rosin, nothing else involved. Solvent extraction uses hydrocarbons like butane or propane to strip the resin, which are then purged out of the finished product. The purge is the part that matters, and it is verifiable: a residual solvent panel tells you whether it worked.

So a properly purged hydrocarbon extract that passes its panel is a clean product. It is not a compromise or a cheaper tier. And a carelessly made solventless product is still a carelessly made product — there is no method that makes bad work good.

Solventless does not guarantee a better product. It removes an entire category of thing that can go wrong. Those are different claims, and only the second one is ours.

We lead with solventless because we prefer having fewer failure modes to manage. But we will carry a hydrocarbon extract when it is made well and it passes, and we will publish the panel either way. Our concentrates guide compares the methods properly.

The Panel Most COAs Skip

If you buy one thing from this page, buy this habit: when you look at a concentrate's certificate, check whether a residual solvent panel was run at all.

It is the single most relevant test for the category and it is the one most often quietly missing. Sometimes the certificate summarises it as "PASS" without printing the numbers. Sometimes the section is simply absent and the potency results are large and colourful enough that nobody scrolls looking for it.

We run the full panel on every batch, including the solventless ones, where the expected answer is nothing at all. That seems redundant until you consider the alternative: a test you only run when you already expect to pass is not really a test, it is a formality. And we publish the numbers rather than the word "pass", because the numbers are the information.

About The Word "Organic"

This matters more here than it does on flower, for the reason at the top of this page: extraction concentrates whatever was on the plant. Our input material is grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers — and we are still not printing the word "organic" on it.

"Organic" is a term the USDA regulates. Putting it on an agricultural product you have not had certified is enforceable, and separately actionable by the FTC as an unsubstantiated claim. Hemp is eligible for that certification; we have not completed it; so we do not get to use the word yet.

The word costs nothing to type. A pesticide panel costs money and can embarrass you. We would rather hand you the second one.

When that certificate exists with our name on it we will say so and show you a scan. Until then, the pesticide and heavy metal panels on every batch COA are the thing to check, and they are more informative than the adjective would be. There is a fuller answer in the FAQ.

Every batch tests under 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight — the federal threshold for hemp under the 2018 Farm Bill — and the figure comes from the batch COA rather than from a marketing page.

We block shipment to the eleven states that restrict these products, enforced at checkout rather than left to you. As with flower, state law in this area changes faster than federal law does, and we would rather cancel a sale than send you something your state has banned. Where hemp THC can legally ship explains the four different mechanisms states use.

What We Will Carry

Solventless first, because it is what we would rather sell. Batch potency and terpene numbers publish with each drop.

The Numbers, In One Place

The handling targets from everything above. Concentrates show it when these slip — product that was held warm separates and darkens, and that is not cosmetic.
