Microdosing means taking an amount small enough that you do not feel intoxicated — typically 1 to 5 mg of THC, against the 10 mg that is a standard single serving and the 100 mg in a full COMET.

The appeal is straightforward: people want some effect without the part that makes them useless for the afternoon. Whether that works is a more interesting question than the marketing suggests, and the honest answer involves a genuine tension in the evidence.

What "Micro" Means Here

The term is borrowed from psychedelic research, where microdosing means a sub-perceptual dose. In cannabis the usage is looser and generally means a dose low enough to avoid noticeable impairment.

Rough landmarks, with the caveat that individual variation is large:

  • 1–2.5 mg: most people notice little or nothing overtly. Some report a subtle shift in mood or body tension.
  • 2.5–5 mg: perceptible to many, still well short of impairment for most regular users. This is where most deliberate microdosing sits.
  • 5–10 mg: a normal low-to-standard dose, not a microdose.

Where you land depends heavily on tolerance. Someone using daily may feel nothing at 5 mg; someone who has never taken an edible may find 2.5 mg clearly noticeable.

The Biphasic Argument

The most-cited justification for low dosing is that THC appears to be biphasic — low and high doses can produce opposite effects.

The clearest illustration is anxiety. Several controlled studies have found that low doses of THC reduced anxiety measures while higher doses increased them, in the same experiment, with the same compound. That is a genuinely interesting finding and it is better supported than most claims in this space.

It gets over-extended, though. "Biphasic for anxiety in a lab setting" has become "less is more, for everything," and that generalisation is not established. The dose-response relationship for other effects is not necessarily shaped the same way, and the studies involved specific doses, specific measures and specific populations.

Where the honesty problem sits: microdosing is frequently marketed for focus, creativity and productivity. Those specific claims have very little controlled evidence behind them. What research exists on cannabis and cognition mostly points the other way — toward impairment of attention and working memory, more pronounced at higher doses but not obviously absent at low ones. Anyone selling you a microdose as a productivity tool is well ahead of the data.

Why Precise Dosing Is the Hard Part

The practical obstacle to microdosing is not willpower, it is measurement.

You cannot microdose accurately with a product whose dose you cannot determine. Flower is titrated by feel, which works for finding a comfortable level and does not work for taking 2 mg deliberately. Concentrates make the problem worse, not better — a portion the size of a grain of rice is a substantial dose.

Edibles are the only format where a specific small number is achievable, and only if the product is both accurately dosed and physically divisible. This is why our COMETs are scored into ten facets: a 100 mg gem divides into roughly 10 mg portions, and those divide again. That is a design decision aimed exactly at this problem, and we would rather explain the mechanism than imply the product does something pharmacological that it does not.

Accuracy also depends on the product being what it says. A gummy labelled 10 mg that actually contains 16 mg makes precise low dosing impossible, and mislabelling is common enough in this industry to be worth checking. The batch COA is how you check.

How to Find Your Own Threshold

The point of a microdose is to sit just below the level where you notice impairment, and that level is personal. Finding it is a slow, boring process, and the slowness is the method rather than an inconvenience.

  1. Start at 2.5 mg. Lower if you are new to edibles entirely.
  2. Give it a full two hours. Edible onset runs 30 to 90 minutes and peaks at 2 to 4. Concluding "nothing happened" at the 45-minute mark is the single most common error, and we covered why in the timeline guide.
  3. Hold that dose for several days before changing anything. Day-to-day variation is real, and a single session tells you less than you think.
  4. Increase in 2.5 mg steps, not by doubling.
  5. Stop increasing at the first sign of impairment, then step back down one increment. That is your threshold.
  6. Write it down. Dose, time, food, effect. Memory is unreliable about this and the log is what makes the pattern visible.

Things Worth Knowing First

A microdose is still a dose. It will not exempt you from a drug test. THC-COOH accumulates regardless of whether you felt anything, and daily low dosing produces a longer detection window than occasional larger use. If you are tested, read this before you start.

Daily use builds tolerance even at low doses. CB1 receptors downregulate in response to consistent exposure. Many people who microdose daily find themselves needing more over weeks, which defeats the purpose.

Do not drive. "I do not feel it" is not a reliable indicator of unimpaired driving, and the legal threshold in your state is not calibrated to how you feel.

Medication interactions do not scale down neatly. If you take prescription medication, the dose being small does not make the interaction question go away. Ask a pharmacist.

An Honest Summary

Microdosing is a reasonable approach for someone who wants a mild effect and dislikes feeling intoxicated. The biphasic anxiety finding gives it a real, if narrow, evidential footing.

What it is not is an established productivity or creativity tool, and the confidence with which that gets marketed is not earned. If you try it, do so because you want to see how a low dose feels, and let the result tell you rather than the packaging.
