Walk through any hemp shop and you will find products labelled delta-8, delta-9, delta-10, HHC, THC-O, THCP and several more. The labels look like a product range. They are not. Most of them describe how a molecule was made rather than what it does, and that distinction matters more than any marketing copy on the package.

This guide covers what actually separates these compounds, which ones have research behind them, and why we sell hemp-derived delta-9 rather than the alternatives.

They Are All the Same Molecule, Rearranged

Delta-8, delta-9 and delta-10 THC share an identical chemical formula: C₂₁H₃₀O₂. Same atoms, same count. What differs is where a single double bond sits on the carbon chain — the eighth position, the ninth, or the tenth. That is the entire structural difference, and it is why they are called isomers.

A single bond position sounds trivial. It is not. That small change alters how well the molecule fits into your CB1 receptors, and receptor binding is what produces effects. A key fitting a lock slightly differently either turns it, turns it partway, or does not turn it at all.

The part most guides skip: delta-9 occurs naturally in the plant in meaningful quantities. Delta-8 and delta-10 occur only in trace amounts — far too little to extract economically. Essentially every delta-8 and delta-10 product on the market is made by chemically converting CBD in a lab. That conversion is the single most important fact about these compounds, and it is the one least often mentioned on packaging.

Delta-9 THC

The compound almost everyone means when they say "THC." It is the most abundant psychoactive cannabinoid in the plant, the most studied by a wide margin, and the reference point every other cannabinoid gets compared against.

Because delta-9 is naturally present, hemp-derived delta-9 products are made by extracting what the plant already produced rather than synthesising something new. The 2018 Farm Bill defines hemp by delta-9 THC concentration — not more than 0.3% by dry weight — which means a product can contain a meaningful delta-9 dose while remaining compliant, provided the weight of the product is accounted for. A larger gummy can carry more total THC and still sit under the threshold as a proportion of its weight.

This is the category our products fall into. It is also the category with decades of pharmacological research behind it, which is worth something when you are putting a compound in your body.

Delta-8 THC

Delta-8 became widely available after 2018 because of a gap in how the Farm Bill was written: the law caps delta-9 concentration specifically, and says nothing directly about delta-8. Manufacturers converted cheap CBD into delta-8 and sold it into states where marijuana remained illegal.

Users commonly describe delta-8 as milder than delta-9 — often characterised as roughly half to two-thirds the potency, with less associated anxiety. It is worth being precise about the evidence here: that characterisation comes overwhelmingly from self-reported user surveys and marketing, not controlled comparative trials. The direction of the effect is plausible and consistently reported. The specific ratios you see quoted are not established science.

Two things deserve more attention than they usually get:

The conversion chemistry. Turning CBD into delta-8 requires an acid catalyst and a solvent. Done carefully in a proper facility, it works. Done carelessly, the reaction produces byproducts — other isomers, residual acids, unreacted solvent — that end up in the finished product. Published analyses of retail delta-8 products have repeatedly found compounds that were not on the label and, in some cases, are not well characterised at all.

The legal position is far messier than "federally legal." A substantial and growing number of states have specifically banned or restricted delta-8. The DEA has taken the position that synthetically derived tetrahydrocannabinols fall outside the hemp exemption, which is a live question rather than a settled one. Treating delta-8 as straightforwardly legal because it is derived from hemp is a bet on an unresolved argument.

Delta-10 THC

Everything said about delta-8's manufacturing applies to delta-10, with less research on top. It exists in the plant in even smaller quantities, requires the same kind of conversion, and has been studied less than either of the compounds above.

Delta-10 is typically marketed as more stimulating or "sativa-like" compared to delta-8. We would treat that claim with real caution — not because it is necessarily false, but because there is very little to support it beyond product descriptions written by people selling delta-10. If you have read our piece on the indica/sativa myth, you will recognise the pattern: a tidy binary applied to a messy reality because it makes for easier marketing.

The Alphabet Soup: HHC, THC-O, THCP

Briefly, because you will encounter them:

  • HHC is hydrogenated THC — the same idea as turning vegetable oil into margarine. More shelf-stable, limited human research.
  • THC-O acetate is an acetylated derivative. This one warrants specific caution: it is not naturally occurring in any amount, and inhaled acetate esters have been linked to lung injury in other contexts. The DEA has stated it considers THC-O a controlled substance.
  • THCP is a genuinely naturally occurring cannabinoid with a longer carbon chain that binds CB1 far more strongly than delta-9 in laboratory assays. It is real and interesting. It is also present in the plant in vanishingly small amounts, so commercial THCP is typically synthesised, and dosing research in humans is close to nonexistent.

The common thread: the further you get from delta-9, the more you are relying on manufacturing quality and the less you can lean on published research about what the compound actually does.

Why We Sell Hemp-Derived Delta-9

Three reasons, in order of how much they matter to us.

It is what the plant makes. Extraction concentrates something that was already there. Conversion creates something that was not, and every conversion step is an opportunity for byproducts you did not intend and cannot see.

The research base is real. Delta-9 has been studied for decades. We can tell you about onset, duration and dose-response with reference to actual literature. For delta-10 we would be repeating marketing copy, and we would rather not.

The legal footing is clearer. Hemp-derived delta-9 sits within the Farm Bill's own definition rather than in the gap beside it. That is not a guarantee — hemp law is genuinely unsettled and state rules vary sharply, which is why we name the states we cannot ship to rather than discovering the problem at your doorstep. But there is a meaningful difference between operating inside a definition and operating in the space the definition did not anticipate.

How to Evaluate Any of These Products

Whatever compound you are looking at, and whoever is selling it, the same checks apply:

  1. Is there a current Certificate of Analysis, and does its batch number match your package? A COA for a different batch tells you nothing. We wrote a full guide to reading one.
  2. Does the COA include a residual solvent panel? For any converted cannabinoid this is not optional. Conversion uses solvents and acids; the panel is how you know they were removed.
  3. Does the cannabinoid profile show anything unexpected? Unidentified peaks on a converted product's report are a reason to walk away.
  4. Is the lab independent and named? An in-house number is a claim, not a verification.
  5. Is the compound legal where you live? Particularly for delta-8, which many states have restricted regardless of federal status.

None of this requires you to trust us. That is the point of it.
