Concentrates are what you get when you strip a hemp plant down to the parts that do something and throw away the rest. The plant material — the fibre, the chlorophyll, the bulk — is separated out, leaving cannabinoids and terpenes at a far higher concentration than the flower they came from.
Where flower might test at 15–25% total cannabinoids, a concentrate can run 60–90%. That is the appeal and it is also the entire risk profile in one sentence: everything is amplified, including whatever should not be there.
The Only Distinction That Really Matters
Concentrates get sold under a bewildering set of names — shatter, wax, budder, crumble, sauce, badder, diamonds, live resin, rosin, hash. Most of those describe texture, which is a function of how the extract was agitated and cured. Texture tells you very little about quality.
The distinction that actually matters is solvent-based versus solventless.
Solventless
Made with physical force only — ice water, agitation, heat and pressure. No chemistry.
- Rosin is pressed from flower or hash using heat and pressure. Nothing is added at any point.
- Ice water hash / bubble hash separates trichome heads using cold water and screens.
- Dry sift / kief is mechanical sieving of the resin glands.
Solventless is generally more expensive because the process is less efficient and demands better starting material. You cannot hide poor flower behind a solventless process the way you sometimes can behind a solvent one.
Solvent-based
Uses a solvent to dissolve cannabinoids off the plant, then removes the solvent.
- Butane or propane extraction (BHO) produces shatter, wax, budder and live resin.
- CO₂ extraction uses supercritical carbon dioxide.
- Ethanol extraction is efficient at scale and common for distillate feedstock.
Solvent extraction is not inherently bad — done properly in a licensed facility with proper purging, residual solvent falls below detection. The problem is that "done properly" is doing a great deal of work in that sentence, and you cannot assess it by looking.
This is why the residual solvent panel exists. For concentrates it is not a nice-to-have, it is the single most important section of the lab report. If a solvent-extracted concentrate has no residual solvent panel on its COA, you have no way of knowing whether you are about to inhale butane. Do not buy it. Distillate and Isolate
Two categories worth separating out because they are made differently and behave differently.
Distillate is refined through fractional distillation until a single cannabinoid dominates, often above 90%. It is potent, consistent, and nearly flavourless — the distillation strips terpenes along with everything else. This is why so many distillate products have terpenes added back afterwards, sometimes cannabis-derived, often botanical. Nothing wrong with that, but it is worth knowing that the flavour was reintroduced rather than preserved.
Isolate goes further: a single cannabinoid purified to 99%+, usually a white crystalline powder. Zero terpenes, zero anything else. Useful when you want one compound and nothing else — it is the lowest-risk option if you are trying to avoid THC entirely, though as we noted in the drug testing guide, contamination during manufacturing is documented and isolate is not a guarantee.
If the entourage effect is real — and the evidence is suggestive rather than settled — then isolate is the format least likely to benefit from it, since there is nothing else present to interact with.
Full Spectrum, Broad Spectrum, Live
Three terms that describe what was preserved rather than how it was made:
- Full spectrum keeps the plant's whole cannabinoid and terpene profile, including THC within legal limits.
- Broad spectrum keeps the profile but removes THC. Removal is a process with a tolerance, and independent testing has repeatedly found measurable THC in products labelled this way.
- Live means the starting material was frozen fresh rather than dried and cured. Live resin and live rosin preserve volatile terpenes that are otherwise lost during curing, which is why they taste markedly more like the growing plant.
Dosing: The Part People Get Wrong
This is where concentrates genuinely differ from every other format in terms of risk.
With a scored gummy you know your dose to the milligram. With flower you titrate by feel over a few minutes. With a concentrate at 80% cannabinoids, a portion the size of a grain of rice can contain more THC than a full serving of most edibles — and because inhaled onset is nearly immediate, there is no window in which to reconsider.
Practical guidance:
- Start smaller than looks reasonable. A visibly tiny amount is a real dose.
- Wait a full ten minutes before more. Inhaled effects peak fast, but not instantly.
- Temperature matters. Lower temperatures preserve terpenes and produce a gentler effect; high temperatures vaporise more at once and are harsher on the throat and lungs.
- Concentrates are not a beginner format. Not because anything catastrophic happens, but because an uncomfortable experience is a bad introduction and is easily avoided by starting elsewhere.
What to Check Before Buying
- Residual solvents. Non-negotiable for anything solvent-extracted. If it is solventless, the panel should still be there and should read clean throughout.
- Batch number matching your package. As with everything else — a COA for another batch tells you nothing.
- Pesticides and heavy metals. Concentration concentrates contaminants too. A pesticide level that was marginal in flower is multiplied in an extract made from it.
- Cannabinoid profile. Unexpected peaks on something sold as a simple extract can indicate conversion chemistry the seller has not disclosed. See our guide to the isomers for why that matters.
- Appearance and consistency. Dark, oily or unusually sticky material can indicate poor starting material or degradation, though appearance is a weak signal compared to a lab report.
Storage
Concentrates are more stable than flower but not indefinitely so. Keep them cool, dark and airtight. Silicone containers are convenient for handling; glass is better for anything you are keeping a while. Heat and light degrade cannabinoids and drive off terpenes, and a concentrate left somewhere warm will change texture noticeably — shatter turning to budder is usually just this.
Unlike flower, refrigeration is reasonable for long-term storage, provided the container is properly sealed so condensation cannot form when you take it out.
Is a Concentrate Worth It?
Honestly, it depends what you want. Concentrates deliver more cannabinoid per inhalation with less plant material burned, and a well-made live rosin genuinely tastes closer to the plant than flower does. Those are real advantages.
They also demand more of you: more care with dosing, more attention to lab results, and more trust in the manufacturer, because the processing steps between the field and the jar are where things go wrong and none of them are visible in the finished product. For someone who reads COAs, that is manageable. For someone starting out, edibles or flower are a more forgiving place to begin.
For concentrates, the residual solvent panel is the section that matters most.
